Fertility Nurse / Fertility Midwife - Band 6 (Full Time hours, 37.5 hours per week)

Job Description


1. To work in theatre during egg collections, embryo transfers and surgical sperm retrieval as ILS trained nurse.

2. To admit, recover and discharge patients on the ward

3. To be involved in planning and co-ordinating of patient treatments

4. To book patients for egg collections, IUI’s and FER treatments and input procedures on to the computer.

5. To book anaesthetist when required

6. To take bloods from patients and invoice as necessary

7. To teach patients their treatment regimes and injection techniques and complete necessary mandatory consent forms.

8. To assist with patient information evenings as required

9. To order consumables as required

10. Participate in the nurse on-call rota

11. To meet with patients post consultation and direct them accordingly

12. To ensure that patients have settled their accounts at the appropriate time.

13. To support the Nurse Manager and cover her responsibilities in her absence.

14. To prepare and maintain accurate clinical and patient records, both written and computerised in line with agreed protocols.

15. To maintain confidentiality at all times and ensure the rights and dignity of the couples are maintained at all times.

16. To maintain professional development according to NMC guidelines, including up-to-date knowledge of current accepted practice and professional issues.

17. Actively participate in CARE’s competency assessment process.

18. To comply with NMC regulations regarding PREP and maintain all standards of professionalism performed to the NMC code of conduct.

19. To undertake mandatory training including health and safety, fire, manual handling and I L support

20. Attend CARE Clinical and Unit meetings.


1. To comply with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority’s Code of Practice, the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, the Care Quality Commission (Registration) Regulations 2009 and the Data Protection Act, with special reference to patient confidentiality.

2. To comply with the Health and Safety policies with particular reference to procedures to be followed in the event of a fire and to report all accidents and untoward incidents to the Health and Safety officer.

3. To undertake mandatory training as required, including health and safety, fire, manual handling.

4. Actively participate in CARE’s performance management processes and competency assessment processes.

5. To comply with Infection Control policies and procedures.

Job Requirements



  • Registered Nurse or Midwife



  • Proven post-registration experience


  • Gynae/obstetric background
  • Venepuncture
  • Ultrasound scanning



  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise own workload
  • Ability to record and retrieve information using a computer
  • Good IT skills



  • Empathy and understanding of the needs of patients
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as well as the wider multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patients over the telephone, face-to-face and in writing


  • Basic counselling skills



  • An understanding and appreciation of patient confidentiality


  • An understanding of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and Care Quality Commission (CQC)
